Byrne’s Fishery is situated approximately 6 miles south of Ballina and 3 miles north of Foxford just off the N26. It is a well-known stretch on the Moy and has consistently produced large catches of salmon over the years.
The fishery consists of approximately 2 miles of single bank fishing comprising of such well renowned pools as the Yellow River Pool, Slippy Clay, The Fort, The Ledges, The Weeds, The Branches and The End Pool. It is primarily a bait fishery and consistently produces large numbers of salmon on the ‘Flying C’, spoons, spinners, worms and prawn. There are also a number of the pools suitable for fly fishing.
The fishery is managed on a semi private basis so that the fishing guest is assured of plenty of freedom on the river. The crowding of pools is avoided as the number of rods are limited. Car parking facilities are available beside the river, where easy access is available from the main road (see map).
The Pools

The best known pools on Byrnes’ Fishery are: The Yellow River Pool; The Slippy Clay Pool; and The Ledges. The first pool the angler encounters on the fishery is the Yellow River Pool. The water in this pool is approximately 6 feet deep. With a gravelly bottom, the pool fishes well throughout the season, but especially for spring fish in March, April and May.
The Slippy Clay Pool is situated between two deep bends on the river. The water is slow moving with an average of about 11 feet in depth. There is always one or two big fish holding in the pool at any one time and best methods are worm and spinners. The Ledges Pool is probably the most popular pool on the fishery. A good spot for a spring fish and comes into its own when the main grilse run starts. The top of the pool starts at about 6 feet in depth and comes down to a deep bend with approximately 20 feet of water. The pool fishes best in low water conditions.
