Baker’s Fishery is located immediately upstream from the Foxford Bridge and the town waters and extends to over1 mile of double-bank fishing. The fishery has 11 named pools. Some of these are deep holding pools, where bait and spinning is recommended. However, some shallower pools with their fast current, will fish well on the fly from June onwards when water conditions are low.

The Pools

The upper part of the fishery adjoins Cloongee on both banks and overlaps Cloongee on the west bank, both sharing Carrigeen Pool. During the earlier part of the fishing season, this pool can be very productive and usually fishes especially well from late March until June. It has many large rocks, all concealed under the waterline and with a medium fast flow, has a depth of between 8-12 ft. The most popular methods fishing Carrigeen early in the season are the Devon Minnow, Flying ‘C’, spoons and worms.
Downstream from Carrigeen the water deepens with an average of 12 ft. This water holds big numbers of salmon and during the summer months when conditions are right, the angler is offered more than a sporting chance.
The lower end of the fishery starts at Carson’s Field on the east bank and Johnny Henry’s on the west bank. This area, known as ‘Jossie’s’ is well-suited to the fly angler and from June onwards fly-fishing is well worth while. Some of the better flies are the orange Garry Dog, Gold Shrimp and Tiernanís Shrimp Fly.
Upstream from ‘Josie’s’ is the Alders Pool and this is a long straight stretch of approximately 300 yards. It is fishable only from the east bank as high bushes and trees grow on the west bank. During September, fishing with a heavy black Flying ‘C’ can be mo
