Knockmore Fisheries
KNOCKMORE Salmon Anglers Fisheries operate two separate stretches on the west bank of the River Moy three miles north of Foxford just off the N26. Both beats are little more than one mile apart and are adjoined by private fisheries on either ends.
Permits for the fisheries are issued on production of a current State salmon licence to the club’s waterkeepers who patrol the bank regularly in order to maintain a safe and legal code of practice for all concerned. Once a guest has purchased a permit, there is a choice to fish one or either of the club fisheries on that day.
The pools which are predominantly bait and spinning water, produce excellent catches of both spring and summer fish. Spring catches for the 1999 season was one of the best years due to the suspension of the salmon traps at Ballina.
The lower fishery
This fishery has many famous holding pools and is primarily made up of Padden’s Pool, The Flag Pool and the Ditches Pool.
Paddens pool consists of a sandy rocky bed which produces consistent catches throughout the year. Most successful methods for spring fish is spinning and worming which can also be effective with summer grilse if the water is high. However when the water levels are low (mostly July/August), the bubble and fly is very successful in this pool.
The Flag Pool consists of a rock bed with fishing methods similar to that used in Paddens, but in high water, due to the features of the pool, bait fishing is excellent due to fish lying closer to the banks.
The Ditches is predominantly a spinning pool due to slower and deeper water but it usually fishes well in lower water conditions.
The upper fishery
The top fishery is primarily made up of pools known as the Yellow River, The Alders, The Wood Pool and The Rake.
The Yellow River Pool consists of a sandy bed which is easily fished. It produces good catches all season and in July and August is ideal for the bubble and fly. The Alders is a slow deep pool, ideal for bait and lures.
The Wood Pool is one of the best-known pools on the entire River Moy. It consists of a rocky bed and is ideal for all types fishing. The Rake Pool fishes well in high water and is predominantly a bait pool. The Knockmore Angling Club are pleased to thank: Mount Falcon Fisheries and Coolcronan Fishery for their co-operation in leasing the waters; the North Western Fisheries Board and their staff for protecting the waters and the farming community for their co-operation.
