Rinnaney Fishery
Foxford Salmon Anglers

(Scott Knox Gore)

The Rinnaney Fishery is located on the Lower Moy and begins at ‘The Brook’, approx. 1 mile downstream from Foxford and extends for 3.5 miles to where the Yellow River joins the Moy. Rinnaney occupies the east bank on all of this stretch.

The fishery has 26 named pools, which gives an idea of the abundance and variety that Rinnaney offers. The fishery gets off to a good start early in the season and fishes well right through to the 30th of September. It is highly productive for both bait and spinning fishing. The bubble float and fly is very successful in mid to low water when conditions are right.

The main pools

The Point is the name of the pool at the start of the Rinnaney Fishery. It fishes particularly well in mid to late season, especially with the worm. The Rinnaney Straight is renowned for its grilse fishing and during summer runs grilse can be seen splashing all over the straight. The best method is spinning with a black Flying ‘C’ and catching the running fish.

The Rinnaney Bends sees the start of the distinctive horse-shoe feature on the river. It is one of the most productive pools on the fishery with usually a good head of fish moving in and out of the pool at all times, but especially in high water. A good pool for spring salmon in March, April and May.

The Lucky Rocks pool, as the name suggests, has seen a significant number of anglers catching their first fish on this pool. There is deep water quite close to the bank and during the 1999 season it fished excellent from July through to the end of September on the worm.

Shralura is a nice wide pool which sees the salmon running upstream on the far bank. There is always a good chance of a fish here, particularly with the spinner. Scott’s Corner, further downstream, consists of mostly deep holding pools with fish lying here throughout the season. Again, another pool with a proven track record for yielding spring salmon.

The Channel Pool is quite wide, as the river takes a further bend. It is very deep in places, but an effective method for salmon here is to fish the worm slowly along the bottom. Johnsons Straight consists of a nice stretch of fast water and is another likely spot for grilse. Spinning or bubble and fly in lower water can be a promising method to grass a salmon.

The Ledges is an ideal place for the novice angler with always fish to be seen in the pool. Spinning is a particularly suitable method as there is a good clear river bed with little or no snags. The Ledges usually fishes especially well in mid-to-late season.

Most of the lower pools from The Ledges downstream to the joinings pools seem to fish better in late season (August/September) particularly with shrimp or prawn, when legal. The Yellow River Joinings Pool fishes well all season long and is a ‘hot spot’ for big fish. A considerable number of 10 lb+ salmon are caught here every year with even more lost before being landed. A minimum of 12 lb breaking strain nylon is recommended when fishing this pool.
